After a degree in history (Uni of Glasgow) Jane worked in the wine trade. She then re-trained as a registered veterinary nurse (RVN). She gained coaching and quality assurance qualifications. Then her DTLLS and a Pg Cert in Clinical Education. She is also a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Prior to her PhD Jane was an educational development tutor.

Her thesis is titled; Professionalising Animal Medicine – the history of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1881.
