For the actual writing bit it’s worth bearing in mind a couple of points. Imagine an assignment like a well made sandwich. We often assume the actual writing is the hardest/longest part when the opposite is true.
The finding resources, reading them and forming opinions is the chunky bottom slice of bread. The writing part is started in that chunk of bread as you make notes and observations.
Then the writing and editing is the small but super tasty filling.
Finally ontop of that we have another chunky slice of bread which is your citations, referencing, bibliography and any images/tables that you need to include. This section will always take longer than you plan for, leave time and energy for it!
When you get into the writing then check cards 38 – 42 of Cards Against Procrastination. These will help with tips on the basics of writing
sentences – approx 20 – 28 words per sentence
paragraphs – approx 200 – 300 words
headings – use as a guide for you but also signposting for your readers
You’ll also get some information on introductions, conclusions and abstracts from these cards. Advice varies more in these areas depending on which subject area you are in. Scientific abstracts are different to humanities or social sciences. So check in with your course handbook and check out advice from tutors.
